General Assembly

Geopolitical risks and opportunities of the retreating Arctic ice

As the Earth's climate continues to warm, a substantial reduction of the Arctic ice has now become unavoidable, opening up for new trade routes and resource extraction, but also a new arena for global conflict. Not to mention massive ecological impacts. The General Assembly will discuss how to tackle this new geopolitical reality and how the world can make the best of the opportunities and minimise the risks.

The General Assembly is the main body of the UN for policy and debate, where every country is represented. It writes resolutions on broad and non-technical questions, making it a suitable committee for beginners.

Tillie Morris

Hiii!! I'm Tillie, a 3rd year European Studies student at Maastricht University. Originally, I am from Guernsey and Jamaica. I will be chairing General Assembly alongside the lovely Santiago.

I must agree, Oppenheimer has been a movie I've watched repeatedly the last few weeks - a definite favourite!!

I cannot wait to meet you all in-person in December.

Santiago Salazar

Hey hey everyone! I’m Santiago (feel free to call me Santi), a Peruvian third-year student of European Law at Maastricht University, who will be co-chairing the General Assembly alongside the amazing Tillie

Whilst my movies taste is certainly an abomination (i.e. my guilty pleasure is Project X), my 80s & 90s Spanisrock music playlist certainky makes up for it :)

Looking forward to meeting you all and kickstarting AmsterMUN in style!

About AmsterMUN

Founded in 2025, AmsterMUN was created to fill a surprising gap: despite being a global city with major universities, Amsterdam lacked a flagship international MUN conference. From December 5–7, 2025, we’ll bring together 200 students from around the world to debate pressing global issues across seven committees, including the UNGA, UNSC, European Council, and ICJ.

The conference is organised by the AmsterMUN Secretariat, part of SIB-Amsterdam | DUNSA, the Student Association for International Relations, founded in 1947 and home to over 300 active members passionate about diplomacy, politics, and international affairs.
