Reforms to global debt relief and loan conditionality

In recent years, global sovereign debt has reached record heights, and particularly for many developing countries, crippling debt and interest payments severly hamper the ability to develop. At the same time, some accuse China of weaponising its loans to exercise control over developing countries, while others accuse the IMF of the same practice. ECOSOC will debate this critical issue and consider possible reforms to how soverieign loans are offered and forgiven.

ECOSOC is the organ tasked with coordinating the UN's economic and social activities. With a broad range of voices and somewhat technical topic, ECOSOC is well suited for both beginner and intermediate delegates.

About AmsterMUN

Founded in 2025, AmsterMUN was created to fill a surprising gap: despite being a global city with major universities, Amsterdam lacked a flagship international MUN conference. From December 5–7, 2025, we’ll bring together 200 students from around the world to debate pressing global issues across seven committees, including the UNGA, UNSC, European Council, and ICJ.

The conference is organised by the AmsterMUN Secretariat, part of SIB-Amsterdam | DUNSA, the Student Association for International Relations, founded in 1947 and home to over 300 active members passionate about diplomacy, politics, and international affairs.
